About NetPrint V3

NetPrint is "authenticated print" for Mac OS X. This allows the Mac OS X user to print from Applications to the NetPrint Server. Authentication is via Kerberos. NetPrint was written by IT Services.

Each NetPrint printer must be defined in the Mac OS X printing system. After the user chooses which printer to print to, the CUPS backend system converts the printed output and then the NetPrint application (/Applications/Utilities) is run. The NetPrint application asks the user for a grant to charge the print to and other information that may be needed for the printer, such as the form and bin (the bin is used to retrieve output when the user prints to one of the Durhm 139 NetPrint printers).

The NetPrint application uses a locally written "lpr" program to actually send the output to the NetPrint server.

NetPrint V3 Changes

  • NetPrint V3 is a universal binary application.

  • The NetPrint V3's configuration files have completely changed. Instead of a single edu.iastate.NetPrint preference file, there are optional .plist preference files, one for each printer, plus an optional default .plist preference file. In many cases, NetPrint's defaults may be all that is needed and separate preference files may not be needed. In other cases, only a user or system default preference file may be needed. To assist you in creating these optional preference files, use the NetPrint Setup Assistant utility in /Applications/Utilities. See How To: NetPrint Setup Assistant for more information.

System Requirements

Netprint V3 requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later. Kerberos must also be enabled and configured for Keberos 5.
See How to configure Kerberos.

Installing NetPrint V3

IT Services has put together a NetPrint installer that will install:

  • the NetPrint application (in /Applications/Utilities)
  • the NetPrint Setup Assistant utility (in /Applications/Utilities)
  • the NetPrint Application Support files (in /Library/Application Support/NetPrint/)
  • the NetPrint Action Folder (/Users/Shared/NetPrint/)
  • the NetPrint Action Folder Script (in /Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts/)
  • the NetPrint CUPS backend Script (/usr/libexec/cups/backend/netprint)
  • the locally-written "lpr" programs (in /usr/athena/bin/)
  • the (Iowa State based) hesiod configuration file (/etc/hesiod.conf)

To install NetPrint, follow these steps:

  • Double-click the NetPrint.mpkg package installer to install the NetPrint application and all of the support software required by NetPrint.
  • Optionally, drag-n-drop (or copy) the two preconfigured preference files:

    edu.iastate.NetPrint.du139_lj4
    edu.iastate.NetPrint.du139_color

to either the user's ~/Library/Preferences folder or to the system's /Library/Preferences folder if you are going to use these printers.

Configuring NetPrint V3

To assist you in creating the optional .plist files, use the NetPrint Setup Assistant utility in /Applications/Utilities. See How To: NetPrint Setup Assistant for more information.

Defining a NetPrint Printer

To complete your configuration of NetPrint, you also need to define the printers that you want to print to in the Mac OS X printing system. See How To: Defining a NetPrint Printer for instructions.
