About kpoprelay

kpoprelay (Kerberos POP Relay) is a unix user daemon that allows you to read your Iowa State Kerberozied POP Server email from an application that is not Kerberos enabled.

Downloading kftpproxy

Download the kpoprelay installer from here (104 KB).

Installing kpoprelay

IT Services has put together a kpoprelay installer that will install:

  • the kpoprelay unix user daemon (in /usr/athena/bin)

  • the support configuration files necessary for kpoprelay

  • (on Mac OS X 10.4 only) the /Library/LaunchDaemons/edu.iastate.kpoprelay.plist file

Configuring kpoprelay

Mac OS X 10.2 and Mac OS X 10.3

  1. From the terminal, edit /etc/inetd.conf and add the following line:
    pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/athena/bin/kpoprelay kpoprelay -l -d
        ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

Use tabs where ^ is shown above.

  2. Reboot your machine.

Mac OS X 10.4

No additional configuration is necessary. No reboot is necessary.

Using kpoprelay

Specific instructions for various applications are not available here. However, common to all appplications is to configure the application to read mail from your local machine:

POP Server: 127.0.0.1

You must already have Keberos tickets before reading your mail from your non-Kerberos enabled application.

kpoprelay and Microsoft Entourage

  • Microsoft Entourage v. X for Mac does not work correctly with kpoprelay.

  • Microsoft Entourage 2004 for Mac does work correctly with kpoprelay.
