About Eudora

Eudora is an email program that allows you easy access to your university email account.

System Requirements

Kerberos must be enabled and configured.
You must also install MIT's Mac OS X Kerberos Extras.
See How to configure Kerberos for more information.

Downloading Eudora

Eudora is one of Iowa State's Site-Licensed software packages. Eudora will not display ads using this site-licensed version.

If you are faculty, staff or a student at Iowa State, you can download Eudora from here (4.4 MB). You will need your Iowa State Net-Id and password to download Eudora from the Iowa State Site-Licensed Software Server.

Installing Eudora

  • Read the "Eudora License" file

Continue only if you agree to the terms and conditions of this license. Installing Eudora constitutes acceptance of these terms and conditions.

  • Read the "Eudora 6.2.4 Read Me" file

  • Double-click on the "Eudora 6.2.4 Installer" file to run the installer.

    • If you are installing Eudora for the first time:

Install Eudora 6.2.4 for the first time.  (check)
Update an existing version to 6.2.4 for OSX.  (don't check)

    • If you previously have installed Eudora and are updating:

Install Eudora 6.2.4 for the first time.  (don't check)
Update an existing version to 6.2.4 for OSX.  (check)

Installing Mac OS X Kerberos Extras

Required before using Kerberos in Eudora

You can download MIT's Mac OS X Kerberos Extras installer from here.

Configuring Eudora

If you installed Eudora for the first time, then the first time you launch Eudora, you will be presented with the "Settings" dialog, otherwise, open the Eudora application and select Eudora -> Preferences...

  • Under "Getting Started" enter the following:

    • Checking Mail

Username: net-id (where net-id is your Iowa State Net-Id)
Mail Server: net-id.mail.iastate.edu (where net-id is your Iowa State Net-Id)

    • Sending Mail

      Real Name: your name
      SMTP Server: mailhub.iastate.edu
Return Address: net-id@iastate.edu (where net-id is your Iowa State Net-Id)

  • Under "Checking Mail", make sure the following are checked:

    • Account/Server Information

Mail Protocol: POP    IMAP (check "POP")
Authenticaton: Passwords    Kerberos    APOP (check "Kerberos")

    and optionally check the following:

    • Connection
      (this setting is optional)

Check for mail every 10 minutes (check or uncheck as desired)

If you want Eudora to automatically check email periodicly while you are logged in. Please do not set the minutes to a shorter number because checking for new email too frequently adds extra load to the Email Servers unnecessarily. An alternative to checking email periodicly is to use WinZephyr or MacZephyr. The Email Servers will send you a zephyr message when you recieve new mail on the Email Servers.

    • Mail Management
      (this setting is optional)

Leave on server for 7 days (check or uncheck as desired)

If you read mail from different locations, such as your office and your home, you may want to leave your mail on the Email Servers so that you can access your new mail from both locations. Please do not set the days to a larger number because leaving already read email on the server for a long time unnecessarily wastes disk space on the Email Servers.

  • Under "Kerberos", make sure the following are set:

    Use Kerberos (check)
Use Kerberos V/GSSAPI for POP3 (check)

    Kerberos POP3 110
Realm IASTATE.EDU (must be in capital letters as shown)
Service Name pop (must be in lower case letters as shown)
    Service Format ^0/^0@^2

  • Click the "OK" button to close the "Settings" window.
